Part Five: Luangta Mahã Bua’s Assistance to the Thai Nation

At the age of 85, he started a nationwide fundraising campaign. He then began traveling the country teaching Dharma and collecting donations of gold and US dollars to boost the dwindling reserves in the national treasury. That same year, Luangta was injured in a road accident. But even that setback did not deter him. He calmly told his supporters that, even though incapacitated, he was still worried more about the nation than he was about himself. He felt that it was a monk’s duty to help the nation and the world in accordance with the Buddha’s teaching:
Mahã karuõiko natho
Hitãya sabbapãõinaÿ
He announced that:
I help the country primarily for the spiritual benefit of the Thai people. That is my main goal. I intend to go everywhere in the country, no matter how far I must travel, or how difficult the journey may be. Speaking in conventional terms, you might say that I am like a poor beggar asking the people for alms. But in terms of Dharma, I am exercising the power of love and compassion to support the Thai people.
Everything Luangta does reminds us to follow his virtuous example , and be proud to join him in paying gratitude to the nation, to the religion and to our beloved king. Now we know what Luangta is doing, why he is doing it, and why he must work so hard. The answer is clear after listening to his teaching.
As of October 19, 2007, the total balance of gold and US dollars that the Thai people have offered to Luangta as an investment in the country’s economic stability is as follows:
Gold — 11,585 kilograms
US dollars — $10,214,600 dollars
ปลายปีพุทธศักราช 2540 พระชรารูปหนึ่งอายุ 84 ปี
ดำรงสมณเพศด้วยข้อวัตรอันเคร่งครัด
จำพรรษาอยู่ที่กุฏิหลังน้อยกลางป่าเพียงลำพัง
อาพาธ ถ่ายวันละ 7 – 8 ครั้ง จนต้องสร้างเมรุขึ้นไว้ที่หน้าวัด
แต่เหตุใด…พระหลวงตารูปนี้จึงตายไม่ได้
เพราะในปีนั้นเองประชาชนคนไทยต้องประสบกับปัญหาเศรษฐกิจตกต่ำ
อย่างรุนแรง ค่าเงินบาทตกต่ำ คนตกงาน ประเทศติดหนี้สิน

พระหลวงตาจึงตัดสินใจว่า
“หากสามารถกู้ชาติกู้แผ่นดินให้เกลับสู่ความร่มเย็น
ให้เป็นที่ประดิษฐ์สถานพระพุทธศาสนาสืบไป…ขอให้ยาที่ฉัน ถูกกับโรค
ที่กำลังกำเริบอยู่” นับว่าคนไทยโชคดีที่อาการอาพาธของท่านได้ทุเลาลง
เมื่อท่านเริ่มแข็งแรงขึ้น ท่านจึงได้ประกาศเป็นผู้นำในการทำโครงการผ้าป่าช่วยชาติ เมื่อวันที่ 12 เมษายน 2541 ขณะที่ท่านอายุได้ 85 ปี
โดยออกเทศน์โปรดประชาชนชาวไทยทั่วประเทศรับบิณฑบาตทองคำ

ท่านได้บอกกับทุกคนว่า
“แม้เราประสบอุบัติเหตุ กระดูกแขนแตก พิกลพิการเช่นนี้
เรายังไม่รู้สึกห่วงตัวเอง ยิ่งกว่าชาติไทยของเรา
นี่คือ กิจของสงฆ์ สงฆ์ต้องช่วยชาติ ช่วยโลกดั่งพระพุทธเจ้าท่านว่า
มหาการุณิโก นาโถ หิตายะ สัพพะปาณินัง”
“ในการช่วยชาติคราวนี้ เราเห็นประโยชน์ทางด้านจิตใจมากกว่าวัตถุ
ทุกข์ยากลำบากเพียงไหน ใกล้ ไกล เราไปทั้งนั้น
ประหนึ่งว่าเป็นเหมือนขอทาน อาภัพวาสนา เที่ยวขอทานประชาชน ถ้าพูดแบบโลก ๆ เขาพูดกันว่าอย่างนั้น ถ้าพูดอย่างธรรมแล้ว
นี่คือ อำนาจแห่งความเมตตาธรรม อุ้มชาติบ้านเมืองของเรา”
ทุกสิ่งที่พระหลวงตาได้พาปฏิบัตินั้น ทำให้พวกเราต้องย้อนคิดว่า
พระชรารูปนี้ ท่านกำลังทำอะไร…?
ท่านทำเพื่อใคร…? ทำไมท่านจึงต้องลำบาก…? เหนื่อยยากถึงเพียงนี้…
แต่เมื่อได้ฟังธรรม จึงได้รู้ว่าท่านพาทำมหากุศลอันยิ่งใหญ่
เพื่อตอบแทนบูชาคุณแผ่นดินไทย
ให้คงไว้ซึ่งชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ ตลอดไป…
